Respawns around Matras and Vastares.

Postby Rasghost » Wed Jan 06, 2016 6:48 am

The version of The Quest that I am playing is that for PC which I bought on Steam. My game is on Day 23. None of the enemy archers or bandits or others which I first encountered seem to have respawned around Matras even though I left the area and went exploring around Vastares. Also, none of the plants have regrown. Can anyone tell me how respawning works in the new PC version. Many thanks.

You must be away for at least a week in game time for an area to respawn. If you went back even once within a week, the timer restarts.

Yay! Now if I can just keep my character alive long enough to harvest them .....

Correction: plants do not regrow. Monsters, items, etc. regrow, but plants not. Sorry. : )

So one has to go further and further afield to find alchemy ingredients?? Or go and buy them, I suppose.
Interesting....

It is way easier and less time consuming to purchase them from the shops. I mark my town positions outside of each alchemical ingredient shop in the game and just buy all their ingredients every so often, usually before I return to my storage area to make more potions. Ingredients are usually only about 10 gold, and purchasing from the stores is the only viable way that you can obtain some of the ingredients in the main game, such as hops and torstal root. It usually only costs a couple hundred gold to buy all the ingredients from a shop. You can then make that back by selling one or two potions, which is only two or four ingredients. I just stock up this way while I collect ingredients from the various plants in the game. I don't need to visit one area twice, and rarely harvest ingredients twice from the same area because I always have plenty of ingredients.

Yep; I came to exactly the same conclusion. That said, my character is still at a low level and does not have the fighting or alchemy skills to get much gold quickly. That is why I had hoped to take the easier path of harvesting near weaker enemies until stats had increased sufficiently to enable my ranger to survive with fewer reloads and replays. No worries! I just need to be sneakier and more vigilant for a while :)

BTW, how do I identify a storage space as "permanent"? There doesn't seem to be any label on the PC game to let me know that I can safely stash gear in a given container without other goodies respawning and deleting my hard-won treasures.

Permanent storage is not always labeled in the game. There is one that is labeled later in the game (no spoilers). I found out that the graveyard shelf is permanent storage by reading through the forums. There are some others, possibly, but I just mark that place and use it for all my needs until later in the game. You can take junk items and leave them around at random places if you wanted to see if a particular area is permanent but remember to not visit that place for a while (7 days I think) in order to verify. I take the books that you find everywhere that have no bonus and leave them laying around to see what is storage or not. You can also leave other stuff that you can't sell to local shops. Just don't leave quest items laying around!! Those are marked in gold letters. You will ruin your game if you do that. It is safe to leave quest items in permanent storage areas.

The permanent storage area that I was referring to is in the ruined crypt underneath the graveyard of Matras. It is located on a shelf where (no spoilers) you find one of three of something for a specific quest. The shelf is labeled as "Bones of Saint Seyna, the Founder". It is the on the shelf on the wall in the cubby between the picture and the torch. I use that spot until late game and expansions.

Thanks for the reply, Zooberdude. Yep, the Crypt in Matras Cemetery is exactly where I have left some of my weighty stuff including two of those three items you mentioned. I asked about the safe places to leave stuff because I had read through previous forum posts on the subject of safe storage but hadn't yet come across anything labelled as permanent storage and was unaware whether the new PC version of The Quest might have had more specific labelling or not.
Anyway, I shall keep exploring snd will keep your good advice in mind :) .

Yes, the new PC version has that shelf too in the crypt and if you updated the game on Steam a few days ago the message is different here: it gives you a hint about the "permanent" feature of the shelf. : )
No more similar shelves are in the game, except at the very end.

Thanks for that, Sylon. I haven't returned to the Crypt yet, as my character (lvl.11 Ranger) is busy recuperating at the inn in Mithria after battling some of the Undead in the Abandoned Mine.

Thanks also for all the nifty updates. Seeing enemies on the mini-map is especially useful, as well as all the other tweaks you've added :D
