How do I attract the attention of the thieves guild

So now that I'm in vastares how do I attract the attention of the guild to continue the main mission quest?

I talked to the i keeper at the port of Vastares but all he says is that no one can find the guild... I have the letter from Thurm if that helps at all...

Isn't that once I get the quest from the mysterious man to join the thieves guild?

You don't meet the Guild until later in the main quest. You can't meet them until you've been to Phryn and the MM's Tower and done a couple of his quests.
