Noob Question about alchemy/skills in general

Noob Question about alchemy/skills in general

I'm trying to craft healing potions after reading the beginner's guide posted to these forums. However, my alchemy level is only at 17, and when I try to craft one it says my skill level is too low. How should I go about getting my alchemy level to the level I need it at? Thanks to anyone who can help me out!

The better effects the potion has, the better Alchemy skill you need.
If my memory is good, at level 60, you are able to make all the potions.
The alchemists of the towns train alchemy for gold, but you can learn from books too.
