I placed the idols is the shelves and too the items behind the teleported, but when I take the Teleporter it doesn't take me back to the mainland. Have I missed a step?

Yes, take the teleporter and go through the doors to the west. Grab the chest plate and other goodies on the selvf and then go through that teleporter to the mainland.
