I made 2 warriors that worked well. I want to make a marksman for a change but don't know what spell category would work best at keeping enemies away or taking advantage of that. Healing is out as that is more useful to warriors who get hit more.

1-What category would work best for spells and ranged?

2-What spell in particular would work well?

As a ranged character, I would go for spells that cover vulnerabilities. An archer is vulnerable when enemies get near them. The fact that you can't equip shields reinforces this. Your two best options are:

1. Use Protect spells (e.g., Stone Skin) to improve defense. Then maybe use Attack spells with "Touch" in the name to damage the enemies in front of you. I believe the Lightning spell also damages enemies around you.
2. Make a Rasvim archer character. The purpose of this is to gain access to the Undead spells. They let you gain health whilst simultaneously damaging your oponents. Mass Drain Health is an awesome spell which will damage all oponents around you who are trying to rape you and can save your sorry Rasvim hide in any sticky situation (pun intended). However, some people find Rasvims really weak in terms of resistances and defense. To counter this, I would also use the first option along with this, the purpose of which is to fortify resistances and defense.

Other useful spells if you want to be a Ranger/Mage character are the Mind spells. Namely, the Drain mana spells. Furthermore, Environment spells are also a must and are probably the most useful spells in the game for any character.

Other tips would be to use enchanted gear to improve AC, add Drain HP/Mana to arrows and counter resistances. Enchanted gear will be plentiful and extremely useful when you go to other expansions. Trust.
