How to fail the "kill the witch queen" quest?

Some levels ago I lost the hammer and cannot achieve the quest. But how can I fail it? I want to get it out of my open quests.

Once you lose the hammer there is no way of obtaining the hammer again and no way to kill the witch queen. The only possible way is to load a save before that quest. When you accept the quest and receive the hammer, and you talk to pretty much anyone, they will steal the hammer from you. So it is recommended to not speak to anyone during this quest.

Ok. I have the impression that there is no way to fail the quest during normal play. Is there any other way to get this damn quest out of my active quests? Maybe hex the savegame or something similar?
