i can't find the one that the herbalist in Vastares is looking for? Are there generally in game hints or is it just a crapshoot?

You are given a hint when you are given the quest. If you still need help, why not browse the forum's guides? You will most likely find wha you are looking for.

Think about the fairy tale, Little Boy Blue, did he fall asleep under a haystack? Who else do you know who fell asleep under a haystack? Sohea's apprentice? Do you see any haystacks? : ) Maybe a few? : )
