Hello Questers! Now it's time for showing something about how your favorite mobile RPG will look in the future - here are the very first screenshots from The Quest's brand new PC/iPad version which we'll put on Steam, GOG, AppStore etc. You can see pictures both from the past and from the future - of course these new shots are still not from a final version, many elements are missing or under development, but we think you already can feel the difference. : )

As we already mentioned here we'll release this game for new platforms but this time we decided to make a large update, which means totally new high resolution graphics to make the game look really good on big screens. We're trying to add as much new content, features and bugfixes for the PC version as we can, but we have to hurry - we have only a few months for this project because we also want to finish our fantasy board game for Christmas 2015.
We started to work on this PC/iPad version around the end of June and the planned release date is somewhere in September. So hang on, soon you'll again have a good time in the world of The Quest!

Whoa! What a surprise! Awesome!
A little story while it's still bright in my mind:
I played The Quest with my friend (it's always been almost impossible for me because I know too few people who like English and don't deprecate videogames AND like RPG games) for some time and it was fantastic : ) We couldn't understand most of the text so we skipped about 90% of it and still had a lot of fun.
I found myself skipping increasingly less the more I replayed the TQ's base game and Arvale (my first RPG). That's what I think now, I was actually so addicted to these games that I often naturally clicked "New game" right after beating it. I was a kid :) I still totally love The Quest's engine and graphics since then. So I love the old graphics a bit more... But it's only because it is my biggest childhood game, so don't listen to me. The new graphics look gorgeous. Huzzah! The Quest remake! It must become one of the most popular rpgs ever - I really want it to be popular :D

Will we be able to play this new updated Quest on the iPhone, Sylon?

Beckie: hopefully yes, but we're not sure - the game is under development and we have no final decisions yet about the technical side. Of course we'll post here if we'll have any news. One thing is for sure: first we'll release it on PC, then on Mac and iPad.

DeMenchev: thanks for the nice words and for the story! It's good to see that playing our game was part of your English lessons. : )
But don't expect it to be really popular - The Quest is a hardcore RPG with special kind of graphics so it will never be _really_ popular. But we also hope that this version will help us to get this game to a wider audience.

I understand. No matter what the final decision is, I will still continue to play The Quest right along with my other games I play! Quality games are hard to come by, so I stick with the ones that have proven enjoyable and that have strong replay value! :)

I am here just to tell you the one thing: you guys are great!

I used to play The Quest on my old iPhone 3G back in 2009 and it was fascinating. A true RPG experience. A few days ago I found it in my list and launch it again. Emotions are still the same. Beautiful gameplay and narrative design despite the fact that the story is pretty simple and usual. I asked Google about PC version and now I'm here.

I am so glad you guys are going to Steam. And I hope you'll find new fans there. Because you are totally worth it.

Sylon / Redshift wrote:The Quest is a hardcore RPG with special kind of graphics so it will never be _really_ popular

Of course it will never be popular like The Witcher 3. Because people are stupid. They want UE4 graphics and blurred consoles nextgen, a bunch of cinematics, a controller support, 20 different endings and also a chance to have sex with every pretty lady in the game. But I hope it will be popular in another way. Let me explain.

I am a story writer of Exoplanet: First Contact. This is also a single-player, story driven hardcore action-RPG set in a space western universe (like the one in Firefly TV-series), where real and fictional technologies meet the cruel and unforgiving, yet romantic reality of the Wild West exploration and development.

We are international team of professional developers and modders from Russia, Ukraine, Germany, and Great Britain, a collective of like-minded individuals who aren't satisfied with the course modern AAA titles are taking in the RPG genre.

I mean you guys are not alone. There are many other people who loves old school games like Gothic and Morrowind. It is a shame that modern games looks like a movies with all those beautiful cinematics breaking narrative design. That is why we are challenging mediocrity to make a game designed with brilliance in mind. Actually we even got our own custom built engine.

And I think you are going to be popular for the guys like me. Actually I can't wait the day I can have The Quest on my Steam account.

Also we are going to Kickstarter at 12th of August, I mean really soon. And maybe we are going to see how many gamers are really like old school hardcore games. We worked hard for it but still not sure about the success.

Also we can help you if you are going to Steam Greenlight. We already got our small community and we hope we will find many other players after Kickstarter campaign.

Thank you again for the wonderful game. It also helped me to learn English. That is priceless.

Thanks for the nice words very much, Bijou! We also hope we'll get some new fans on Steam - this will be the first step, the base for The Quest 2. : )

Yeah, we seem similar from many viewpoints but I'm afraid we are still not enough to make a hardcore oldschool rpg really popular. This is not a tragedy of course, we only need a popularity which can keep ourself above the surface so we could focus on making games instead of making money for living. I think if we can port our games to as many platforms as possible with better graphics, we'll reach this goal.

Good luck with Kickstarter! Thanks for the offer, if the time will come and we'll need some help, we'll contact you! You also can follow us on Facebook to keep updated where we are currently on this way. : )

Sounds familiar. A little tip: if you want to get as much money as you can you should create really good and noticeable banner for Steam. Something like this:

Image

Also if you are going to Steam Early Access you can get attention to the game twice. That is pretty good decision for tiny indie-teams like we are.

I don't really like FB and other socials but you got me. :)

Hail to Mercant!

Well, it's a lot more complicated than that.
I think it's not about classic RPGs being not very popular as a rule. It's more about what catches people's attention.

I don't know what will happen but I hope for the best : ) Chances are, new games could become much more popular than Legacy was back in the day (I wasn't there. Now that 1src and some other forums where people discussed it are closed you can hardly tell whether it was popular or not :? ).

Bijou: yep, we'll have a noticeable banner. : ) But I think we'll not go to Early Access - this is not a brand new project, its development takes only a few months. So we'll release it only when we'll be done. Then hope the best. : )
(But for TQ2 probably we'll try out Early Access too.)

DeMenchev: yes, of course it's more complicated. The Quest is not just a simple classic rpg, it's oldschool, hardcore and hand-drawn, with an unique type of humour, so not a really popular combination.
By the way, Legacy WAS popular, at least in its market (PDA devices) in those days. (Talking about 1src, Legacy had the longest forum threads on that site...) But it was a small market. After a long-long period of no real oldschool rpgs out there. We was in the right place at the right time. As for now, I'm not sure about that, but we'll be OK with that. We don't have big expectations. At least not now. : )

Very happy for you guys but I have some questions:

1) Will you keep the old version of the quest in the appstore and the expansions when you release the iPad version?
2) I'm guessing that the old expansions will not work on this version because they will have to be updated with new graphics either, right?

Long live The Quest, long live Redshift!

Wow. It's beautiful.
Thank you very very much for working on this update.

I don't think that many people decide whether to download a game or not after seeing its contents (they generally can't do that until they buy/download it :) ) Maybe it's important to have a stunning, detailed, popular-looking combination of screenshots, banners, trailers, reviews, etc? (unskippable sponsors and click baits don't count. Those are very bad, even if they work, in my opinion  ) I'm sure that very many people would love such humor, gameplay, graphics and music, it's just not very likely to come across something mentioning "The Quest" from time to time :)
Also, is this just an update allowing higher resolution graphics while everything stays the same? So that any existing expansion will work, except maybe needing the added graphics replaced with bigger ones to look good? If so, maybe it would be really nice to have an option to switch new/old graphics.
There should also be a way to disable enabled expansions in every version.
I wonder if it's flexible enough for all that or it's very different from what I think it is. I'm just curious

Keep up the great work!!! :D

Kyanan: we not decided it for sure but yes, I think we'll leave the old version too in the AppStore.
I'm not sure about the expansions either, but probably they will work just they will have those old graphics - and probably with time I'll make new graphics for some of those expansions too. We'll see how much time we'll have for those things. Now we're busy with the base game. : )

Beckie: thanks for the nice words, as always! : )

DeMenchev: let's hope the best! Yes, this is "just" an update. At least now. As for the expansions, we'll see, I don't know it for sure. I think they will work just with those old graphics. All this flexibility will depend on Elendil too, and he's not there yet to think about those things, he's busy now with the base game's source code to get it in better shape, fix all bugs, etc.

Don't change the graphics the new graphics make it look REALLY WIERD the old graphics are better for it fits the old theme song and weather sounds the men look strange in the new graphic update and I'm most likely not gonna play this game again cause of it

I love it sylon! I'm not too sure why, but the sconces stand out to me a lot. Though, I do have one question; will you update the graphics of the sword and shield when they're equipped? Because as of right now, they do seem a bit lack luster in comparison to the world graphics. Other than that, I love everything you've shown thus far!

While I really like the new graphics (they feel new without being too different) I was wondering if there will be an option to switch between the old and new graphics? I was playing on PC a while ago and had some bugs at start up so I'm at least very happy to be able to play without worrying about that now.

(Also, are there any plans on porting to android, or is that more work than it's worth?)

Prickett: yes, of course the fps graphics (your weapons) will be updated too - just I'm not there yet. : ) Right now I'm making the monsters.

Voldenoir: we're working on it, only Elendil will know he'll be able to make this "switch to older graphics" function or not - please wait a few weeks until everything will be clear technically. : )

No, there will be no Android version, at least not in the near future, sorry.
