I was in the same situation. I am playing as a Seiry (Thief) and I too started with -30% which was hard at the beginning.
Simply said: All I can say is be sure to enchant your gear to also have Magic Resistance. Also Buy/find a want of Resistance this will greatly aid you in battle against magic users. If you want you can also throw extra points to Intelligence as well.
I am now at level 22 and my resistance is at 80% and magic users RUN from me
