I can't equip the Eye of Hell for the reason "You cannot equip this." Any reasons why?

Is that the item you get from the cult leader? I think I remember that not being equipable, too. Maybe you have to have evil orientation?

I also got some unholy crown from the robber cave WAY at the beginning.

I think it has to do with your race's natural tendency toward good along with you being a typically good character. That can lock certain items off from you. Likewise, my evil Rasvim can't use holy stuff. The necklace isn't very good from what I remember. You're better off just clearing your conviction for the crime.

Weird, I am unable to equip the Eye of Hell even with my evil alignment character. Does anyone know if there are more quests or storylines connected to the cult? I remember an npc mentioned they practice their rituals near the mountain to the north but I didn't see anything.

It's coded so it can't be used. So you can't use it. : ) I wouldn't worry about that. If you have it, that's the important thing.
