I know this is a stupid question, but I had just started the game. How do you go about using the lockpicks and such?

There are some doors that can only be opened with using lockpick. To open them, you need to have a kind of lockpick in your inventory, and a certain level of 'Lockpick' skill.
When you click on those doors, a question will pop up if you'd like to try your lockpick. If the condition of your lockpick is good enough to use it, and if you have enough skill points, you'll be able to pick the lock of the door, and open it by touching it.

Or if you're a magi you can cast unlock spells, much more likely to work as well as having the exact same effect

But to open those doors with Unlock, you need a certain level of your 'Unlock' skill.
