If you are standing on a rock or piece of grass to climb up somewhere or down----the script can only check if you have one piece of the item---like a rope----so if you have more, drop the extra or put them on a shelf with permanent storage. Old Shaman's room has shelves with permanent storage. Mark there and drop your extra stuff on one of the shelves.
