Odds or evenses levers

In the old tunnels under Bream Island, there are 5 levers along a south wall by a sign saying odds or evenses. I flipped them every other one up and down, and got a Bing, but cant see whar changed. Any ideas?

Flip all the switches up since you started using them. Then switch all the switches with even numbers down. Don't touch the odd-numbered switches. Then a door near there should open.

I flipped the switches correctly, heard the ping, deactivated the well and got a key. BUT, I can't find a newly opened door, the key won't open the locked gate (no chance to pick successfully) and I can't find the manuscript. I've talked to both woman.
