Waiting vs sleeping

Noob question here, is there any way to just wait, as opposed to sleep and consume food etc?

1 step/hit/spell = 1 minute
Sailing a ship = 1 hour
Playing a card game = 1 hour

You have to walk and do things to make time flow.
