Its not really that its weird, its just a little too specific
I find it when mages are the main bad guy they are annoying but as soon as you find out their weakness they are easy. In Baldurs Gate 2 I had no problem bumrushing Irenicus with a few tanks and got it right on my 2nd or 3rd go. In Geneforge 1, I killed the enemy mage trajkov with ease for my guardian and he didn't have a chance once I engaged melee.
In the other end, Eschalon book 2 you face a 9 foot tall minotaur (taurax) wielding a 2 handed mace like a child and dealing major damage to your character. If you don't use tactics you will get destroyed as he not only takes you on with by himself but with 3 other lackeys. It took quite a few ideas to take him down with a melee fighter but it was much harder than irenicus. In Baldurs Gate 1, like General Ghorr in Eschalon, you get destroyed until you get a good strategy that works.
I just think when you face an enemy that is so off the wall like that, you have to think of tactics on how to get around their strength. With mages, you take a few good strikes and they are done.
You can mock me but you cant deny the tactics it takes to do some of those fights. Its friggin off the wall.
